Lonza's Leap Frogs

Lonza's leap frogs "leap to learn!"

"Time's fun when you're having flies!" or is it "Time flies when you're having fun!?"

5th Grade has a very interesting, but challenging curriculum.  Study skills are very important.  Please check with your student each Monday to see if they not only have their homework check-off sheet, but also the spelling list, vocabulary list, and state identification map for the week (during Geography only).  Each Monday students look up all vocabulary words and write down the definition for each.  They are to study these words each night to prepare for the test on Friday.  They should understand the meaning of the word well enough to be able to use it correctly in a sentence, as well as know the definition.   The spelling list should also be studied each night.  I would suggest learning 8-9 words each night, concentrating on those missed on the Pretest given Monday.  The final spelling test will be given on Thursday.  In the same way, during the geography unit, students need to study the location for the states on the state map for the week-concentrate on 2-3 each night.  As you can see, much of 5th grade homework is putting in  study time-it is not only a worksheet to be turned in.  Homework assignments are listed on the board each Monday so students are better able to plan their homework/study time.  Students should write these assignments down as soon as they receive their homework check-off sheet.  Parents need to sign the check-off sheet each Friday.  This way I know that you have seen your student's homework and any important announcements attached.

Students who do not turn in daily homework and daily math assignments will not only earn a lower grade in that subject, but will also have their conduct/effort grade lowered.  Students must put forth the effort  to succeed in these areas, therefore their conduct/effort grade will be affected.  After two consecutive weeks of missing homework assignments, students will call home to inform their parents of this missing work.

Accelerated Reader (AR) will continue to be an important part of your student's reading grade.  I will expect student's to get at least 75% of their goal to keep the grade earned in overall reading performance.  If students earn less than 75% of their reading goal I will drop their grade one grade.  In other words, if a student has earned an A, their grade will be lowered to a B.  To earn an A in reading, students must earn 100% of their reading goal.

Please remember Nichols is a mandatory uniform school.  Students should wear a uniform everyday with shirts tucked in.

If you have any questions about these policies and procedures, please feel free to call the school office at 631-5400.  I will return your call as soon as possible, or we can arrange a conference.
